Information about the course

March 9th, 2009

The course is aimed at artists or individuals with an arts background who are working in the arts, health, education or community sector. The part-time structure of the course is designed to support and enhance your current work practices and assist the development of new opportunities.

The course aims to equip students with the necessary skills to initiate and manage truly inclusive arts projects with diverse and marginalised groups. We hope to engender the enthusiasm, skills and knowledge for appreciating human difference and a desire to use the arts for positive social change, self-expression and wellbeing.

Course leader Alice Fox is known nationally and internationally for her inclusive arts education research and is a practicing artist and performance artist.

We aim to explore key issues in the inclusive arts debate by collaborating artistically with marginalised community groups such as those with learning disabilities or those experiencing exclusion due to economic or health reasons. We also intend to challenge the debate on which artists are socially and economically valued and why.

Areas of study

Our experienced academic team have developed a course that enables practice-based arts research. This may cover a broad spectrum of disciplines including, but not limited to, painting, printing, performance, photography and sculpture. There are many supported opportunities for studio based work that focus on the practical

application of theory and research, exploring inclusive

arts practices, learning disability, ethics, moving and still imaging, disability and the built environment, project management, and fundraising. Students will benefit from a wide range of activities including:

  • the opportunity to work on real life arts projects such as Access to Art, Rocket Artists (www.rocketartists. co.uk) and Architecture-Inside Out (www.architecture-insideout.co.uk)
  • support from specialist arts practitioners and other professionals for collaborative working with diverse groups
  • an exploration of key issues and debates around exclusion, disability and the arts
  • professional skills development to independently initiate, seek funding for, and deliver collaborative and inclusive arts projects
  • a programme of visiting lecturers from the arts and voluntary sectors

Time commitment

Usually the course is delivered through one half-day seminar session and one full-day practical session per week, (this could be linked into students own projects or work) with additional commitment to independent study and project delivery. However, our approach is flexible so this may vary if required.

Who should apply?

Most applicants are likely to have a background in the arts, understood to include art, design and architecture.

Graduates and professionals from other relevant fields such as health, education or social care may also be eligible, provided they can demonstrate evidence of sustained and committed arts practice of sufficient quality to meet the demands of the course.
